EasyJet: Edinburgh To Vienna In Economy
/For our Vienna trip, we flew economy with EasyJet direct from Edinburgh Airport (EDI) to Vienna International (VIE). We’ll be reviewing the booking, check-in and on-board experience in this article.
Flight Booking
The plan was to try and find return flights to somewhere neither of us had visited before for less than £150 per person. We’d looked at a few places but settled on Vienna for a few reasons. Cheap flights, nice Hilton Hotels (with great upgrade potential) and Christmas markets galore.
Through Skyscanner, we found return EasyJet flights for a total of £235.92 (£117.96 per person). They had a few added bonuses too. The outbound flight left early (7:00am) and the inbound flight left late (20:40) so we could make the most of our time in Vienna.
Since the trip was 3 nights, 4 days, we didn’t bother to add any hold luggage either. Hand luggage (no extra charge) suited us fine.
We paid with the American Express card, netting us 235 Amex points too (worth between £1.17 and £7.99 depending on redemption).
Check-In
Online EasyJet check in opened 30 days before the scheduled flight departures and since we booked the trip around 2 weeks before we left, we just checked in for both legs immediately after we booked.
This process was seamless and no hassle.
We like to avoid paper tickets if we can (saves on paper and hassle) and since I have the EasyJet app we could save boarding passes for each flight to Apple Wallet (making them easily accessible).
Since we’d already checked-in, had our boarding passes and were carrying hand luggage only, we headed straight to security when we got to Edinburgh airport.
These were the EasyJet cabin and hold baggage allowances:
Checked Hold Bags: 3 Bags Each (paid for) - maximum 23Kg per bag (buy up to 32Kg max)
Hand Luggage: 1 cabin bag (up to 56x45x25cm - including wheels and handles)
Additional Laptop Bag/Handbag: For Flexi, Upfront, Extra Legroom and EasyJet Plus cardholders only)
Since we are both with Three (referral: £25 Amazon Gift Card), we had the option of going Hands free. This meant we could drop off a cabin bag at the EasyJet Plus Bag Drop, we’d get given a Three tote bag for items to take on board) and the bag would be get priority delivery on reaching Vienna.
We opted to just take our hand luggage on board with us but we had this option if we wanted to use it.
EZY6935 Edinburgh (EDI) to Vienna (VIE)
Flight
We had no priority boarding but we were near the front of the queue (to make dealing with our hand luggage easier).
After a few minutes, we were herded out into the depths of winter (no jetway here) and at one point we had to wait for a gate to be opened. We were given the inferior front and rear outside stairs option but we were all loaded on efficiently.
The flight left the gate bang on time at 7am GMT, with takeoff at 7:16am (6 minutes late).
It was clear skies all the way to Vienna with some great views as we were coming in to land. We landed at 10:15am CET (10 minutes early) and we arrived at the gate at 10:21am CET (14 minutes early).
Seats
The seats, in a 3-3 configuration, were tighter than I remember but it might just be the fact I was comparing it to the BA Club Europe cabin from our trip to Venice in March.
This EasyJet A319 had a standard seat pitch of 29” (72.5cm) and a width of 18” (45.7cm). You won’t find rear seat or overhead TVs on board either.
Although we didn’t bother reserving seats for the extra fee, we were given two seats together. One window and one middle seat, near the rear of the cabin.
Food and Drink
EasyJet doesn’t offer complimentary food or drink on board so we’d recommend either buying food in the terminal before you fly or buying food on board the plane.
Here are a selection of food/drink items and prices from the on-board Bistro menu:
Meal Deal (Main + Non-Alcoholic Drink + Snack): £7.50 or €9.50
Kids Meal (Snack Box + Soft Drink): £4.90 or €6
Breakfast Deal (Breakfast Option + Snack): £4 or €4.50
Hot Drink Deal (Hot Drink + Snack): £4 or €4.50
Cadburys Fingers Deal (Hot Drink + Cadbury Nibbly Fingers Share Bag): £4.50 or €5.50
Light Meals: £2.50 or €3
Sweet or Savoury Snacks: £2 - £3.50 or €2.50 - €4.50
Wines, Beers, Ciders or Spirits + Deals: £4 - £11 or €5 - €14.50
Crew
We didn’t have much interaction with the crew since we didn’t order any food or drink but from the small interactions that we had, the EasyJet crew were all polite and professional.
Conclusion and Scoring
The flight was as expected. Designed to get you from A to B as cost-effectively as possible (so no food/drink and no in-flight entertainment). That said, we’re quite happy to use iPads/phones to stay entertained so it doesn’t really affect the in-flight satisfaction.
In cases where we’re flying economy, instead of looking at comfort and amenities, I tend to focus on punctuality, customer service and price. The flight took off 6 minutes late but arrived at the gate at Vienna airport 14 minutes early, so high scores for punctuality.
The price was more than satisfactory considering we booked it 2 weeks beforehand and the destination (Vienna) sees tourism peak at this time of year (with all of the Christmas markets). We didn’t have much interaction with the staff, primarily because everything ran smoothly so thumbs up for customer service too. Having the option to go hands free thanks to Three (referral: £25 Amazon Gift Card) was a nice potential bonus too.
