American Airlines AAdvantage members with elite status can match to Delta SkyMiles. AAdvantage Platinum Pro and Executive Pro members can match to SkyMiles Platinum Medallion whilst lower tier AAdvantage Platinum members can match to SkyMiles Gold Medallion. Here, I’ll detail the status matching process and break down all of the benefits you’ll get with elite Delta status.

Status Matching American Airlines To Delta SkyMiles

To be eligible for the American Airlines-Delta status match, you must have earned your AAdvantage status the usual way (you can’t have earned it though a credit card promo or similar). You also can’t have been given free Delta status in the past 3 years. That is unless you received Delta status thanks to a Million Miler achievement with Delta.

Initially, Delta will match your status for 3 months. As soon as you match, you’ll be enrolled into their Status Match Challenge. That means Delta will extend your newly matched status if you hit certain minimums in their 3 month window:

• To Extend Gold Medallion - 12,500 MQMs OR 15 MQSs (AND $1,500 MQDs* - US Members Only)

• To Extend Platinum Medallion - 18,750 MQMs OR 25 MQSs (AND $2,250 MQDs* - US Members Only)

MQMs refer to Medallion Qualification Miles, MQSs refer to Medallion Qualifying Segments and MQDs refer to Medallion Qualification Dollars. Earn MQMs, MQSs or MQDs on any Delta, Delta Connection or Delta Parter-operated flight.

Bear in mind that you can extend your status into a lower Delta tier (eg. Platinum extended to Gold) if you only meet the lower tier extension requirements. However, you can’t bump up your status by achieving those requirements. So you can’t, for example, extend your status from Gold to Platinum.

*The MQD requirement is waived if you spend $25K on a qualifying Delta American Express Card the calendar year you match. If your 3 month status match challenge window crosses into the next year, you have to hit the $25K minimum spend in calendar year 1 or 2 (before the 3 month window ends in that 2nd year).

How To Complete The Status Match

First of all, join Delta SkyMiles if you haven’t already. Once setup, write down your Delta SkyMiles number as you’ll need this for the match.

Once you’ve done that, login to American Airlines AAdvantage and take a screenshot of your AAdvantage status, making sure your name is visible. Then, view the ‘Helpful Links’ dropdown menu and select ‘Activity’. There, take a screenshot of your recent American Airlines activity. Enough to prove that you earned your AAdvantage status the normal way (rather than through a credit card or similar promo).

Now that you have all the proof you need, go to the Delta Status Match page and complete the online form. In the ‘Other Airline’ box, put ‘American Airlines’ and in the ‘Status On Other Airline’ box, enter your current American Airlines status. Upload your 2 supporting screenshots as evidence and hit ‘Submit’.

It can take up to 3 weeks for Delta to confirm your status match so bear the timeline in mind if you’re waiting to make a Delta booking.
